The Alexandria Trust is a new charitable venture founded by Egyptians, incorporated in the UK in 2011, and soon to register in the US and Egypt. The Trust’s vision is to develop a new generation of citizens, across the Arab world and beyond, who can serve as active and informed participants in their societies, wherever they may live. It will achieve its aims by providing access to outstanding teaching and thinking in the social sciences and humanities, thereby fostering and upholding independent critical thinking.

The Trust will incubate projects in five target areas:

1. Competitions, fellowships and placements, including juried prizes for essays and debating, with a preliminary focus on Egypt and the Arab world.
2. Content distribution, using state-of-the-art technology that leapfrogs barriers such as lack of Internet access.
3. Setting new gold standards for independent journalism in education.
4. Creating new standards and accreditation measures, with a collaborative kitemarking system across all of the Trust’s work.
5. Promoting philanthropy in higher education.

Founding Trustees:

Salah Khalil, founding Director of Macat International, a company dedicated to providing global access to thought leadership and quality content in the social sciences.

Professor Heba Raouf Ezzat, Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences, Cairo University.

Emma Playfair, human rights lawyer, former Regional Representative for the Ford Foundation’s Cairo Office, and former Executive Director of INTERIGHTS.

Executive Director David French is former Chief Executive of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and Commonwealth Institute.

Encyclopædia Britannica is a leading provider of learning and knowledge products. We're proud to be one of the world's most trusted sources of information on every topic imaginable - from the origins of the universe, to current events and everything in between.

For any organisation that aspires to take all human knowledge; organise it, summarise it, and publish it in a form that people find useful, the challenges and opportunities have never been greater than they are today. The volume of information is exploding, the world is shrinking and digital media are changing the way we read, think and learn.

To meet these challenges and opportunities, Britannica has done what we have always done throughout our 240-year history; sought the very best minds in the world to help us. In the past, we had names like Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Marie Curie, Bertrand Russell, T.H. Huxley and George Bernard Shaw, all of whom were Britannica contributors in their day.

Today Encyclopædia Britannica has a larger and more diverse line of products than ever before. Our outlook is shaped by our tradition of excellence and an understanding of what knowledge seekers need in the digital age.

In 2002 Britannica introduced Britannica Online School Edition, a comprehensive reference and education service specially designed for primary and secondary schools and updated daily. Today we have linked that online resource to Learning Platforms and other important delivery mechanisms for schools.

Educators today face huge challenges as they prepare students for increasingly competitive, globalised markets. Many employers are concerned about declining interest in important subjects such as science and technology, as well as the education system’s abilities to teach skills that young people need when they enter the workforce; skills that drive innovation, such as creative problem-solving and critical thinking.

We believe that education needs to focus much more on engagement and relevance in schools. Students need to be given greater scope and more dynamic tools that allow them to explore their talents and exercise their creativity. They need experiences that allow them to apply curriculum learning so that it makes sense in a real-world context.

LEGO® Education is helping to reshape approaches to teaching and learning by bringing cutting edge educational resources and methods that meet these 21st century needs. Working in close collaboration with companies such as National Instruments and with leading universities including Carnegie Mellon, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts (US), and Cambridge (UK), LEGO® Education has developed a range of resources for primary and secondary schools that cover the core areas of the curriculum - science, maths and literacy - in an authentic and hands-on way. LEGO® kits allow students to build realistic working models that bring text books and theory to life.
